Good morning, staff and students of Jesuit Memorial College. My name is Chizaram Katelyn Ikwueto of SS3C and I am here to present the virtue of the week which is communication.

Communication takes place every day when we pass across messages to the next person through our silence, our actions and our words. So, what exactly is communication? Communication is the process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information. It is more than just talking. It is about honestly expressing ourselves in a way that the other person can comprehend. It is not just about making ourselves heard but also effectively listening to each other. True communication is about connection because communication actually takes place when connection is created.

Communication is also about how we speak, our tone, facial expressions and our choice of words. A kind word can lift someone’s spirit just as a harsh one can break someone’s confidence. That’s why before we speak, we should take time to think about how our words will affect others.

Communication isn’t just about the words we use. Our actions also help us effectively communicate our thoughts and feelings. In fact, the best communicators aren’t always the loudest people – they are the ones who make others feel seen, heard and respected.

Importance of Communication

Communication is very important in our day-to-day activities because it helps to:

  1. Build relationships as a result of similarities in feelings, needs and ideas
  2. Avoid misunderstandings that may arise as a result of unclear communication
  3. Encourage cooperation and coordination among classmates or team members as it ensures that everyone is carried along
  4. Promote growth and innovation which in turn leads to productivity and success
  5. Enhance leadership as leaders are able to motivate their teams, provide clear directions and ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.

Here at JMC, communication is what helps us work together. When we share our ideas clearly, respond with respect, listen attentively to understand each other and show empathy, we make our classrooms and staffrooms more welcoming, vibrant, positive and supportive. It is important that we learn to communicate effectively with the students, staff, school management and the prefects of the school. Listening first, speaking thoughtfully and using our words to transfer positive and heartwarming words will help to strengthen the bond among us as members of the college community.

As we begin our activities for the week, let’s make sure that when we communicate, we do it with clarity, kindness and purpose so that our words connect with others and leave a lasting positive impression on them.

Thank you and have a great week ahead.
