Admissions

Welcome to Jesuit Memorial College (JMC), Port Harcourt, Nigeria. JMC is a Catholic co-educational boarding secondary school. Owned and run by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), it is open to all irrespective of religion, ethnicity, nationality or race. Its vision and mission are founded on the writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. JMC was founded in October 2013 in memory of 60 students of Loyola Jesuit College (LJC), Abuja, Nigeria who died in the Sosoliso plane crash of 10 December 2005.

JMC provides a well-rounded education in terms of conscience, competence, compassion, and commitment. At graduation at the end of Senior Secondary Three (SS3), that is, (Grade 12), we expect our students to be open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious and committed to promoting justice.

We admit students into Basic 7 (JS1) and SS1 (Grade 10) on the basis of an Entrance Examination and their disposition to the tenets of Jesuit education and formation ascertained by means of an in person or virtual interview. Candidates for admission into the first year of Junior School (Basic 7) should be in Primary 6, that is, Grade 6 and should be 11 years old or near it by the time the school year begins while those for admission into the first year of Senior School, SS1 (Grade 10) MUST have satisfactorily completed Junior School with the promise of future development in the areas of the graduate at graduation (open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to just). Candidates are tested in English Language and Mathematics.

JMC conducts a joint Entrance Examination with other Jesuit and Jesuit Partner schools in Nigeria (Loyola Jesuit College (LJC), Abuja, Gonzaga Jesuit College (GJC), Okija, Arrupe Jesuit College (AJC), Abbi, and St. Francis Catholic Secondary School (SFCSS, Lagos). The examination is based on the curricula developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) for (Basic 4-6) and (Basic 7-9) respectively. We offer admission to all candidates who meet our admission criteria for the year regardless of their religious persuasions, ethnicity, nationality, race or gender.

Education and formation at JMC are of a high standard and holistic. The relatively few students who make it through our thorough admission process experience with all its rigours,

an education and formation that touches every aspect of their lives: intellectual, moral, religious, physical, and so on. It goes without saying that, the education and formation which students receive and experience at JMC make huge demands of them but also of the staff and management of the college who instruct, mentor, and accompany them as well as their parents/guardians who constitute an integral part of the college community of faith, scholarship and service.

We eliminate or, at least, bring to a minimum anything that is likely to get in the way of the education and formation of any of our students. Eliminating or reducing potentially negative elements in this way means asking everyone involved to make sacrifices, some of which are quite painful but certainly bearable. For instance, as soon as school resumes, we do not allow students to go home until it is time for a holiday: Christmas holiday, Easter holiday and long holiday in July. This means that JMC students participate in out-of-school engagements (visa processes, anniversaries, routine medical care, etc.) during holiday only. The policy guarantees that no student misses any aspect of the holistic education we provide.

If what you want for your child is a world-class secondary education, then you are right to consider JMC. Please click the application link on this page and follow through the application process. We now admit students into Basic 7 (JS1) only, on the basis of an Entrance Examination and their disposition to the tenets of Jesuit education and formation ascertained by means of an in person or virtual interview. Candidates for admission into the first year of Junior School (Basic 7) should be in Primary 6, that is, Grade 6 and should be 11 years old or near it by the time the school year begins. Candidates promise their disposition to future development in the areas of the graduate at graduation (open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to justice). Candidates are tested in English Language and Mathematics.

We operate a joint Entrance Examination with other Jesuit owned and partner schools in Nigeria (Loyola Jesuit College (LJC), Abuja, Gonzaga Jesuit College (GJC), Okija, Arrupe Jesuit College (AJC), Abbi, and St. Francis Catholic Secondary School (SFCSS, Lagos). The examination is based on the curricula developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) for (Basic 4-6). We offer admission to all candidates who meet our admission criteria for the year regardless of their religious persuasions, ethnicity, nationality, race or gender.

At the completion of six years of education and formation, our students are expected to be young men and women who are conscientious, persons of interior life who diligently search for meaning and the transcendence; who are competent, towards a new understanding of learning as key to human development; constantly acting as a way of service to God and others – a current understanding of domestic life and ecological commitment and action.
