As I reflect upon my experience of the Service Project programme, I am filled with a mix of emotions, chief among them, a heartwarming feeling of profound realisations. This opportunity has given me a chance to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the children at Badamia Association Home for Children, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while also teaching me important life lessons.

One of the most striking aspects of the programme was the resilience and optimism displayed by the children. Despite the challenges they have faced, their smiles and enthusiasm were contagious. It was a humbling reminder of the power of a positive attitude and the importance of cherishing the little joys in life. Spending time with them made me appreciate the privileges and blessings I often take for granted.

In my center, they organized an activity known as field work. This gave us the opportunity to go out on the streets to educate children and youths on different topics as well as offer them food in order to sustain them and enable those of them that may be using drugs or committing street crimes to turn a new leaf. This was a very good learning experience for me because I got to witness what they go through every day and see where they stay for shelter and it made me feel compassion for them and see things through a whole new perspective.

Furthermore, collaborating with the dedicated staff at Badamia Association Home for Children was an eye-opening experience. Their selflessness and dedication to the children’s well-being were evident in every interaction. I learned that making a sustainable impact requires a team effort and a long-term commitment. This insight has encouraged me to seek out opportunities where I can contribute consistently to causes I am passionate about.

Undoubtedly, there were moments of heartache too. Having to wake up early every day, hearing some of the children’s stories and understanding their struggles underscored the importance of addressing societal issues such as child welfare and poverty. This experience ignited a desire within me to advocate for systemic change and support initiatives that aim to provide a brighter future for disadvantaged children.

Looking back, this Service Project programme has been transformative. It has shown me the value of empathy, the significance of giving back to the community, and the potential to create lasting change through collective efforts. While I hope to have positively impacted the lives of the children, I am equally aware of the profound impact they have had on my own life. This experience will continue to guide my actions and decisions as I strive to be a more compassionate and responsible global citizen.
